6 on the outside
for the 2 holes that go all the way through, 3 faces x4 + 1 on the bottom
then for the one hole that goes half way, 4 faces
6 + (3x4) + 1 + 4 = 23

Can you explain why it isn't 5 + 16 + 6 = 27?

5 (is correct) + 6 (the outer faces are also correct). But instead of 16 the rest is 12...It's because the holes that are left, they have 2 sides that go all the way to the other side (so +2 faces) and 2 sides that are cut halfway through (so +4 faces, and that's because of the other hole that goes all the way to the other side), overall +6 faces for each of the two holes, so +12! Finally, 5 + 6 + 12 = 23! It's weird, at first I counted 27 too
